Tapioca fiber: the quiet ingredient

Here's a secret about every powdered supplement you've ever bought: the active ingredients are usually a small fraction of what's in the scoop. The rest is the carrier, the base that gives the powder its body and helps it dissolve.

Nobody advertises the carrier. Which is convenient, because in most electrolyte mixes it's the least impressive thing in the jar.

What most brands use

The industry standards are dextrose and maltodextrin. If those sound like sugar, that's because functionally they are: inexpensive, refined carbohydrates that bulk up a powder for pennies. Maltodextrin in particular can affect blood sugar the way sugar does, which is a strange property for an ingredient hiding inside products labeled sugar-free.

To be fair to the brands, these fillers are cheap, neutral-tasting, and easy to work with. If you're making a product to a price, they're the obvious choice.

What we use instead

Lemon Drop's base is tapioca fiber, a soluble fiber from the cassava root. Cassava is the humble, starchy staple grown across South America, Africa, and Asia; the fiber drawn from it is naturally sugar-free and dissolves beautifully in water.

Two things made it our choice.

It's gentle. Soluble fiber is kind to a sensitive stomach.† Anyone who has abandoned an electrolyte drink because of how it sat with them knows why this matters in something you drink every day.

It's a prebiotic. Soluble fibers like this one feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut, so the base of our powder supports a healthy gut while you hydrate.† The carrier isn't just harmless filler. It's quietly doing a second job.

A useful way to think about it

Think of the carrier like the canvas under a painting. You never look at it, but it touches every inch of the work. A cheap canvas doesn't ruin the picture on day one. It just isn't what you'd choose for something meant to last years, and a daily ritual is exactly that.

How to spot the difference yourself

This one is easy, and it works in any store. Turn the jar around and read the other ingredients under the supplement facts. If you see dextrose, maltodextrin, or glucose syrup solids in a product calling itself clean or sugar-free, you've learned something about how it was built. You don't need us for that check. We'd just rather you make it everywhere.

The honest summary

The carrier is a small decision that reveals the whole philosophy. Sugar fillers are what a spreadsheet chooses. A plant prebiotic that's gentle on your stomach is what you choose when you expect someone's mother to drink this every morning, for years. Ours does.

The full label, base and all, is on the Lemon Drop page.
